Garrison House Decorations
The Garrison House at Fort Johnston is home to Southport’s Welcome Center and Museum.
The Fort, first established by the British in 1745, was later the first commissioned fort in North Carolina. The Garrison House, built in 1810, was initially used to house military officers.
The Garrison House overlooks the Cape Fear River with a broad lawn that contains large, old, live oaks. It’s a favorite of visitors where they can relax in comfortable chairs on the lawn and enjoy the salubrious breezes, warm sun and great views of boats and ships steaming by.
During different holidays, the Southport Garden Club helps with the holiday spirit by decorating the outside of the Garrison House. During the Christmas Holiday, a large tree on the portico and and door wreaths are decorated with a colonial Coastal Carolina theme. 4th of July finds the Garrison House decorated in flags and patriotic floral displays.
